An Increase in Fat-Free Mass is Associated with Higher Appetite and Energy Intake in Older Adults: A Randomised Control Trial

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cross-sectional studies in younger adults have demonstrated a positive association between energy intake (EI) and fat-free mass (FFM), with this relationship seemingly mediated by resting metabolic rate (RMR). Establishing causal effect longitudinally would be prudent older suffering from loss of appetite. We investigated the effects FFM on RMR, appetite EI 39 healthy (age: 66 ± 4 years, BMI: 25.1 3.5 kg?m2) assigned to either 12-week resistance training + protein supplementation group (RT PRO) or control (CON). Body composition, subjective appetite, leptin, insulin, RMR laboratory-measured ad libitum were measured at baseline, weeks 6 12 intervention, while daily baseline week 12. (+1.2 kg; p = 0.002), postprandial (+8 mm; 0.027), (+119 kcal; 0.012) (+133 0.010) increased RT PRO. fasted leptin insulin concentrations remained unchanged (all > 0.05). The increases correlated (r 0.527, 0.001), 54% change attributed changes. In conclusion, associated an adults.

The biology of appetite control: Do resting metabolic rate and fat-free mass drive energy intake?

The prevailing model of homeostatic appetite control envisages two major inputs; signals from adipose tissue and from peptide hormones in the gastrointestinal tract. This model is based on the presumed major influence of adipose tissue on food intake. However, recent studies have indicated that in obese people fat-free mass (FFM) is strongly positively associated with daily energy intake and wi...

Body composition and appetite: fat-free mass (but not fat mass or BMI) is positively associated with self-determined meal size and daily energy intake in humans.

The idea of body weight regulation implies that a biological mechanism exerts control over energy expenditure and food intake. This is a central tenet of energy homeostasis. However, the source and identity of the controlling mechanism have not been identified, although it is often presumed to be some long-acting signal related to body fat, such as leptin. Using a comprehensive experimental pla...

Ageing Is Associated with Decreases in Appetite and Energy Intake—A Meta-Analysis in Healthy Adults

It is not well recognized that in the elderly weight loss is more common than weight gain. The aim of this analysis was to determine the effect of ageing on appetite (hunger/fullness) and energy intake, after overnight fasting and in a postprandial state, by meta-analyses of trials that included at least two age groups (>18 years). We hypothesized that appetite and energy intake would be less i...

Falls and postural control in older adults with cataracts

Background: There is increasing evidence that visual impairment contribute to falling. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of vision impairment of old adult patients with cataract on the occurrence of falls and postural control. Methods:According to the results of screening ophthalmic examination, 48 cataract patients (mean±SD aged 68.5 ± 6.08 yrs.) and 50 individuals withou...
